Why visit?

Katharagama is a significant pilgrimage site for Buddhists, Hindus, and indigenous Vedda people, embodying centuries of shared religious traditions. It’s a fascinating place to witness diverse cultural practices, colourful festivals (especially during the Esala Perahera in July/August), and unique spiritual devotion.

Best time to visit: During temple pujas (offerings), usually in the morning and evening, to witness the ceremonies. The Esala Perahera festival (July/August) is a grand spectacle.
Dress code: Modest attire is essential (shoulders and knees covered) when visiting the complex. You will need to remove your shoes before entering the temple areas.
What not to miss: The main Kataragama Devalaya (shrine), Kiri Vehera (milk stupa), and the various Hindu kovils.
